ASD Operation and Treatment

Females are mostly affected and presents in their 30s-40s or during pregnancy with progressive shortness of breath and palpitation, as our patient presented with. It is usually diagnosed during auscultation and further confirmed with ECG and echocardiography. Symptomatic patients don’t normally respond only to medical management and the defect has to be closed either by transcatheter device closure or by surgical means.

In our patient, ASD device closure was selected as the preferred option by our team of experts on studying the echo . This decision was taken because percutaneous ASD – device closure is a minimally invasive procedure done through thigh which does not require any stitches, general anesthesia and patient doesn’t end up with any scars and patient is discharged after 2 days.
ASD device closure was carried out under the “Swasthya Sathi Scheme” for which the patient did not have to pay anything.

It’s a standard procedure which is done for the first time in Asansol. This procedure is done by our cardiologists Dr Eishita Majumdar and Dr Y.K. Subhash Singh. Postoperatively patient recovered well and was discharged with immense satisfaction and happiness. She could feel the difference in herself and thanked the hospital, doctors and also the Government for Swastha Sathi Scheme.
